A Sure Way to Better Skin: PicoSure
By Chelsea Campbell
It used to be that if you wished to erase bad decisions, your only chance was to find a time machine to hop into - not likely to happen. In other words, you were left to deal with the effects of poor choices that you may have made against your own skin, such as summers spent sunbathing without a lick of sunscreen or an ill-thought tattoo emblazoned on your ankle during a night of impulsive fun. Etching your skin may have seemed harmless at the time, but as the years go by you may be regretting the impetuousness of your youthful choices. What’s left as an ever-present reminder may be hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, or a sad-looking blob of ink that was once a butterfly. The good news is, Cynosure has developed the next best thing to that elusive time machine: PicoSure.
What is PicoSure?
According to the Cynosure website, “PicoSure is the first and only aesthetic picosecond laser for the safe and effective removal of tattoos and benign pigmented lesions, as well as acne scars, wrinkles and skin revitalization treatments.”
Laser treatments have been an established method of addressing pigmentation issues and tattoo removal, which involves using concentrated energy to break down the pigments in the skin, shattering them into very tiny particles which are then absorbed into and eliminated by the body. Laser treatments usually take place over several treatments, which can be quite painful because of the heat generated by the intense energy of the laser. Patients then experience redness, peeling, scabbing, and itching over the following days and weeks to eventually reveal new skin underneath. The number of sessions needed often depends on the amount of pigmentation or the tattoo size, ink color, and placement, and some sunspots and tattoos are never able to fade completely.
Less Heat & Less Trauma
Like traditional lasers, PicoSure is a type of laser whose aim is to break up pigment in the skin, but this innovative technology is also so much more. What is unique about PicoSure is its delivery of highly targeted, incredibly short pulses and wavelengths of energy directed to freckles, sunspots, hyperpigmentation, and tattoo ink. The short pulses of energy mean less heat and therefore less trauma to the skin, making for a more comfortable procedure and giving patients the flexibility of reduced recovery time - only mild redness for a few hours after the procedure. Patients report only mild to moderate discomfort, likened to the snapping of a rubber band, but the procedure may be performed with a numbing cream or local anesthetic to further reduce any discomfort. The amount of time the procedure takes is anywhere from less than a minute to 20 minutes, and average sessions clock in at 10 minutes.
Wrinkles and Acne Scars
PicoSure is able to effectively break down pigmentation in the skin, but amazingly, when used with the Focus lens, it does double duty in its ability to also target fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars as well. According to PicoSure.com, “PicoSure’s PressureWave™ technology uses a unique wavelength of light (755nm) and a specialized lens to convert laser energy into gentle pressure. This pressure squeezes cells, activating the natural cell signaling processes that create new collagen and elastin without burning or damaging the skin.” And while other laser treatments to address hyperpigmentation and sun damage require specific post-treatment care, PicoSure is so gentle and non-damaging to skin that patients are able to immediately apply makeup and resume their normal skincare routine.
A Non-Invasive Approach to Skin Rejuvenation
Although several sessions are still required to effectively shatter the ink particles, patients enjoy fewer sessions and less pain associated with the process. As for anti-aging treatments, the procedure produces brighter, tighter skin and encourages a more rejuvenated appearance. It is a gentle and noninvasive way to reveal youthful skin within a few weeks of treatment.
Whether you are looking to erase an unsightly tattoo, aiming to brighten areas of hyperpigmentation, or simply looking to enjoy younger-looking skin, PicoSure has the ability to meet a variety of patient needs efficiently and effectively with significantly less discomfort and recovery time than traditional laser treatments. Speak to your practitioner to determine how PicoSure can help you turn back the hands of time.
